RECYCLING YOUR FAT TO LOOK YEARS YOUNGER
As the face ages it gradually starts to lose volume, a process known as fat and bone atrophy. Furthermore, facial skin laxity further accelerates this ageing process. This tends to accelerate as time passes and can result in an unhealthy, fatigued or prematurely aged appearance. Fat transfer utilises one’s own fat cells to reverse these effects, providing both structural support to soft tissues and restoring fullness to the face. The transferred fat cells also assist in regenerating the aging skin.
The procedure involves transfer of fat cells (adipocytes) into areas of fat & bone atrophy. Adipose tissue is gently harvested from the lower abdomen, hip or inner thigh using small syringes, processed to garner viable cells and these are then transplanted in thin layers to areas of thinned and sunken tissue. In aesthetic medicine, fat transfer is especially useful for restoring cheek & jawline contours. It is also useful for reducing nasolabial, marionette, lip lines, and in minimising creases and hollowness around the eyes.
Fat transfer also has many other aesthetic applications – it is also used all over the body to improve the appearance and skin flexibility of trauma / acne scars, surface depressions, accidental damage / burns, and certain congenital conditions. Medical applications of fat transfer are being used for arthritis, joint injuries, muscle injuries & soft tissue injuries. Fat transfer is also utilised for improving volume in various parts of the body e.g. Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBL) & Breast Lifts.
AESTHETIC & STRUCTURAL ADVANTAGES OF FAT TRANSFER
By restoring volume to specific areas of the face (the midface, periorbital, perioral and temporal regions respond well), fat transfer not only expands the skin and provides a lift, but also re-establishes the structural support of adjacent tissues. For example, a balanced re volumisation of fat compartments of the cheek will stabilise the lower eyelid by restoring underlying layers, thereby reducing the tendency for hollowness & the formation of eye bags.
BENEFITS OF FAT TRANSFER – “THE Anti-Aging EFFECT”
The fat grafting procedure also has a number of physiological benefits. For example, there is no risk of rejection or allergic reaction as the fat is taken from the patient’s own body.
There is also substantial evidence that grafted fat contributes to the healing process and improves the condition of the overlying skin – properties which are attributed to the fat’s high regenerative cell content and its ability to form new blood vessels. Additionally, the effects of fat grafting can last for many years – although the procedure can be repeated if required.
POSSIBLE LIMITATIONS OF FAT TRANSFER
Typically mild to moderate swelling may be experienced for 1 – 2 weeks following the fat transfer procedure until the grafted fat cells integrate with the surrounding tissue. It is not possible to predict how many of these cells will survive, the extent being determined by patients age, general health & genetic factors as well as the inherent characteristics of the tissue into which it is transplanted. Advanced techniques utilised by Dr Beaini also markedly improve the survival of the transplanted fat graft.
Following the fat transfer procedure, usually a 65-75% fat survival rate is expected. In order to achieve the best possible results and to avoid overcompensating, it is best to estimate conservatively in the first instance and to follow on with a secondary top-up procedure later if necessary.
Fat grafting can be performed either standalone or in combination with most other facial procedures, including Blepharoplasty Eyelid Surgery, Face Thread Lift & Thermage FLX Skin Tightening.
SUITABLE CANDIDATES OF FAT TRANSFER
Fat transfer is not an age related procedure, and it can benefit most people who experience fat atrophy or desire rejuvenation and soft-tissue restoration. Patients are generally aged from their late twenties to late seventies, and it is of most benefit to non-smokers with good general overall physical health. It is a minimally invasive procedure and the best results are seen in areas with previous fullness that have since undergone atrophy.
Fat transfer is an aesthetic procedure that takes fat from one area of your body and relocates it to another area of your body to restore lost or uneven volume and contours. The fat is used as an injectable tissue to treat areas such as the face, breasts, buttocks and the hands. Fat is usually taken from a person’s thighs, flanks, stomach or buttocks and is implanted into the desired areas, most commonly the face.
The Fat is prepared so that it is concentrated and purified and thereby rich in Adipose Derived Stromal Cells (ADSC).
The patients own fat is harvested through liposuction. The harvested fat is then condensed, filtered, and injected into the chosen location of the body requiring rejuvenation and augmentation.
The advantage of Fat Transfer is primarily the fact that a patients own fat, that is rich with regenerative cells, is reimplanted into the desired place. Volume replacement makes the face look uplifted, rejuvenated and healthier. The fat cells that are present in the transferred fat tissue regenerate skin tissue.
Excellent results begin to appear immediately during the fat transfer treatment, and continue to improve with time as the swelling subsides. Results continue to improve for the next 6 – 12 months post treatment.
The implanted fat graft will last for many years in most individuals, especially if they are healthy non-smokers. The treatment may be repeated whenever the patients require a touch up.
Areas that are commonly treated with Fat Transfer:
- Face (e.g. cheek augmentation, temple area, tear troughs, nasolabial lines, marionette lines, jowls, lip lines)
- Neck
- Breasts
- Décolletage
- Hands
- Buttocks (i.e. Brazilian Butt Lift)
Preparation for Liposuction & Fat Transfer Surgery:
Please avoid taking Aspirin or other NSAIDs (arthritis medication) for at least 7 days before liposuction treatment. If you are taking aspirin or NSAID’s for a medical reason, please advise the treating doctor.
This procedure is contraindicated in patients taking warfarin. It is also contraindicated in pregnant or breast-feeding ladies.
Please notify the doctor if you have any significant medical history (e.g. mechanical heart valve or any bleeding disorders), blood thinning medications (e.g. aspirin or arthritis tablets) or any allergies, especially to local anaesthetics or any antibiotics.
Liposuction & Fat Transfer Surgery Post treatment Aftercare:
Up to 3-7 days after a liposuction procedure, mild bruising, redness, swelling and tenderness in the treated area may occur. There may also be some mild oozing from the tiny entry incision sites. This is a normal response and is no reason for concern.
After your Liposuction treatment please ensure the following:
- Keep the entry incision sites clean.
- Take your prophylactic antibiotics that were prescribed for you. It is also recommended that you continue taking Arnica tablets if you have residual bruising.
- Gentle exercise is recommended for the following 2 weeks (e.g. walking or treadmill). No vigorous exercise for the 1st3 days.
- Do not wear any tight jeans if the thighs or ankles are treated.
- Wear the recommended trunk garment if the abdomen was treated.
- Do not sleep on the treated Fat Transfer region for the next 3 weeks.
- Maintain a good fluid intake for the next week.
- It is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which includes regular exercise and a low fat diet. This will assist in achieving and maintaining the best results.
