HOW DOES HAIRESTART WORK?

The method of action lies in the patented Fotona SMOOTH^® pulses that gently deliver laser light to the tissue, triggering the scalp in a safe and controlled way. Fotona SMOOTH^® operates at the optimal infrared Er:YAG laser wavelength (2.94 μm) that coincides with the maximal absorption in the skin.

WHAT CAN PATIENTS EXPECT DURING HAIRESTART TREATMENT?

The Hairestart procedure is a simple non-invasive hair regrowth treatment that does not require surgery. Topical anaesthetic may be applied to the scalp if the individual requests. During the laser treatment session, patients will feel a mild heating sensation while the handpiece is in operation.

The Hairestart procedure takes approximately 20-30 minutes. Treatments are performed every 2 to 4 weeks, with protocol set by the patient’s consultant. Patients will be able to get on with the rest of their day without any issues, nor will they have to take medications as part of the overall laser hair growth treatment.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE SIGNS OF HAIR REGROWTH?

Normally the earliest signs of new hair regrowth in the treatment area include a visible improvement in the volume and thickness of the hair, which can be seen approximately 4 weeks after the first treatment. Another indication is a decrease in how much hair is lost when patients brush and wash their hair. Please note that individual results may vary after laser hair growth treatment.

RESULTS OF HAIRESTART HAIR LOSS TREATMENTS

Several clinical studies of HaiRestart^® have demonstrated high efficacy and an absence of adverse effects. Significant improvement of hair growth along with increased hair density, and a stabilization of hair loss were reported, regardless of AGA (androgenetic alopecia) grade, patient age or AGA duration.

The results of patients’ blind evaluation in one study (Day D. et al., 2021) indicated improvement in hair quality in 93% of patients, which was not correlated with age or AGA grade. In other studies (Dekeyser B., 2019 and Mercik G. et al., 2021), patients reported subjective feedback as well, describing a more elastic and less dry scalp, and thicker, more durable, healthier, and denser hair than previously.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS?

Hereditary Genetic Predisposition

Hereditary genetic predisposition is the main cause of hair loss – this causes hormonal imbalance levels which can be inherited from your father’s or mother’s side of the family. A common family predisposition involves natural, age-related hormonal changes that can cause hair loss.

Hereditary hair loss is extremely common. While there are many causes of hair loss, hereditary hair loss accounts for about 90% of all cases of male hair loss and 50% in female hair loss.

Over time, the progressive shrinking of certain scalp follicles leads to a shortening of the hair’s growing cycle. Hair becomes thinner and shorter, until there is no growth at all. Hair loss can start in your teens, 20s or 30s. Male pattern baldness affects up to 70% of all men. By the age of 50, approximately 50% of men have significantly thinning hair.

Other Hair Loss Causes include:

Acne is the inflammation of the sebaceous glands from retained secretion and is associated with hormone by products. Acne is an indication of hormonal imbalances that often lead to premature hair loss.

Seborrhea is a functional disease of the sebaceous glands that produces excess sebum, which builds up on the scalp. An over production of sebum is a warning sign indicating the same hormonal imbalances that lead to hair loss.

Alopecia Areata is a systemic, non-hormonal cause of hair loss triggered by genetics, diet and stress and is characterized as bald spots that inadvertently come and go and can include permanent hair loss.

Excessive daily hair loss is when 50 or more hairs per day are lost and not replaced at the same rate, indicating potential hair loss problems.

Excessive body hair for men indicates a greater chance of premature hair loss; 50% greater risk if a man has complete chest hair; 70% greater risk if a man has chest, shoulder and back hair; and 90% greater risk if a man has total body hair.

Excessive body hair in women can indicate an imbalance in hormones (e.g. polycystic ovaries). This same hormonal imbalance can cause premature hair loss.

Stress and trauma are prone to produce increased levels of testosterone, which converts to DHT, and interrupts the hair growth cycle.

Nutrition and diet play a significant role in hair loss whereby a high consumption of animal fats, rapid weight loss and liquid protein diets can create a lack of amino acids, biotin, iron, protein and zinc – all of which are essential to healthy hair.

Health issues such as a malfunctioning of the hormone-producing thyroid and natural hormonal changes in women due to pregnancy, childbirth and menopause, can trigger hair loss.

Medications such as birth-control or any hormone therapy can contribute to hair loss as the hair follicle is incredibly sensitive to changes. Steroids, specific chemotherapies as well as many blood pressure, diabetic, heart disease and acne medications can cause temporary or permanent hair loss.

Environmental factors such as toxins, air and water pollutants, chlorine, metals and minerals may be left on the scalp and hair as we wash with water every day. Pollutants such as pseudo-oestrogens and toxins from within our body can also contribute to hair loss.
