WHAT IS SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION (SMP)?
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a new and effective hair loss treatment for both male and female balding – it is a permanent cosmetic tattoo applied superficially to the scalp skin.
Scalp Micropigmentation mimics the very short hairs of a closely shaved scalp and can be used in patients who are either unwilling, or not suitable to undergo hair transplant surgery.
SMP creates a natural look even upon close inspection. It uses a permanent organic, non-metallic ink which has several advantages over other inks. Firstly, the permanent ink does not fade to green or blue over time as do temporary inks. And secondly the non-metallic ink allows patients to have a head MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) procedure in the future if necessary.
The non-surgical procedure is carried out by experienced hair restoration technicians who understand the intricacies of proper hairline design. Topical local anaesthesia is used to assure a comfortable treatment.
The process is safe as single-use disposable needles together with specially formulated organic ink are used. It is a different technique to traditional tattooing as the ink is applied very superficially to ensure only tiny dots are deposited which mimic hairs. The colour of the ink is decided upon to match the colour and tone of each patients shaved hair beneath the skin.
WHO IS SUITABLE FOR SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION?
Scalp Micropigmentation is an excellent option for the following situations:
• Suitable men and women who do not wish to undergo hair transplant surgery.
• Female hair loss with early thinning who don’t need hair transplantation -shading of the scalp using SMP improves coverage.
• Men and women who have previously had hair transplant surgery but still cannot achieve the required hair density.
• Men who have extensive balding and have insufficient donor hairs to provide an adequate transplanted result.
• Scalp Scarring from any cause – the SMP ink is applied throughout the scar as well as above and below the scar to blend the scar into the surrounding hairs.
• Men that want a shaved scalp cut appearance.

SPA treatments are typically performed every 4 weeks, and most patients require 4 treatment sessions. Patients are assessed on an individual basis, and the exact number of treatments depend on the extent and severity of hair loss.
SMP typically takes 2 to 4 hours per session, and this depends on the extent and severity of the treatment area.
Hair transplant surgery can be performed prior to, or after the SMP treatments.
SPA results last for many years, and touch-up treatments may be performed at any time if there is slight lightening over the years.
The cost depends on the area and severity of the scalp hair loss – a complimentary consult is offered to clients to determine suitability and costs.
